Ensure Your Compliance with the New Mercury Regulations: Act Now and Save R25,000!

The New Mercury Regulation: What Does it Mean?

As of February 6, 2025, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has officially released the regulations surrounding mercury waste management in South Africa.

  • By April 1, 2026, all dental practices must ensure that they have an amalgam separator installed that meets the efficiency requirement of 95% to be in compliance.
  • Until then, our interpretation of the regulation is that you are required to have an amalgam separator in use now to capture and properly dispose of mercury-laden waste.
  • DRISA’s amalgam separators meet this 95% efficiency requirement.

Why is this Important for Your Practice?

The new DFFE regulations require dental practices to:

  • Prevent mercury contamination from entering the environment.
  • Install an amalgam separator immediately to capture mercury waste.
  • Ensure your separator is 95% efficient by April 1, 2026, to remain in compliance.
  • Recycle your amalgam separator and chairside kits annually to demonstrate proper disposal of mercury-bearing waste.
